Seven faculty members named AAAS fellows

Seven WUSTL faculty members have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society. The rank of fellow is the highest honor awarded by the AAAS.

Manary awarded Gates Foundation grant
to develop test to detect gut inflammation

Mark Manary, MD, has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a test to detect asymptomatic inflammation of the gut, a common condition associated with poor growth and development. For several years, Manary’s chief professional goal has been to “fix malnutrition for kids in Africa.”

Team plans clinical trials of less-painful defibrillator

Two WUSTL scientists have developed a low-energy defibrillation scheme that significantly reduces the energy needed to re-establish a normal rhythm in the heart’s main chambers. They hope this electrotherapy will be much less painful than the existing electrotherapy, making treatment with a defibrillator much more acceptable to patients.

Handel’s Messiah sing-along set for Dec. 9

The Department of Music in Arts & Sciences will present its annual sing-along of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Messiah at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in Graham Chapel. Copies of the music will be available for those who do not bring their own scores.

Women’s basketball pulls away for win at Elmhurst

The women’s basketball team scored 42 second-half points to defeat Elmhurst College, 70-54, Saturday. WUSTL hosts Millikin University at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Field House. The Bears face Augustana College Saturday, Dec. 8, in Rock Island, Ill.
